September 11, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Poland\u2019s and Latvia\u2019s measures to “close the airspace” along their borders with Belarus are discriminatory and unrelated to the imaginary threats they are supposedly meant to repel, the Belarusian foreign ministry has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement comes after Warsaw has restricted air traffic in the eastern part of the country along the shared border with Belarus and Ukraine until December 10, while Latvia restricted flights over a 50-kilometer border area and up to an altitude of 6,000 meters for at least a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Latvia and Poland announced restrictions one day before the start of a major Russian-Belarusian military drill, Zapad-2025, in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It strongly condemned these moves, calling them particularly absurd in light of the US decision to lift sanctions on the Bie\u0142avija airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian foreign office said, \u201cThe decisions taken by Warsaw and Riga will cause significant damage to the European Union and its business partners, exacerbate existing difficulties in international passenger and cargo transportation, and lead to a further escalation of tensions and the EU\u2019s deepening self-isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian diplomats also cited environmental issues and pointed out that longer flights will significantly boost carbon emissions, \u201cwhich directly contradicts the EU\u2019s stated goals of transitioning to a \u2018green\u2019 economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministry called Belarus a security donor in the European region and mentioned \u201cthe recent case of operational interaction between the Belarusian air defense forces and similar bodies in Poland and Lithuania.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This responsible and constructive cooperation for peace and security is the course of action that Minsk urges its Western partners to take, the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
