September 13, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Prominent opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, pardoned two days ago as a part of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s deal with Washington, is likely under arrest as he is not at his home and his wife does not know his whereabouts, activist Siarhiej Marcale\u016d said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statkievi\u010d reportedly refused to leave Belarus. All other 51 pardoned regime critics, among them well-known Belarusian opposition figures and journalists, as well as 14 foreigners, were taken to Lithuania. According to one of them, Siarhiej Spary\u0161, Statkievi\u010d spent two years and seven months in solitary detention and suffered from Covid-19, a heart attack and pneumonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Released dissidents also testified to torture and ill-treatment in Belarusian prisons. Some of them were reportedly deported from Belarus without passports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed trade unionist Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Are\u0161ka, 70, lost his eyesight behind bars, said released journalist Alaksandar Mancevi\u010d. Hienad\u017a Fiadyni\u010d, pardoned two days ago, said he developed diabetes while in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on September 11 and 12 included a prosecutor’s demand of four years\u2019 imprisonment and a hefty fine for journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161 accused of discrediting Belarus and facilitating extremism, Pozirk <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry said the Committee for State Security (KGB) declared the\u00a0Platforma 375\u00a0<\/em>media project an extremist group on September 4. The KGB named Kiry\u0142 Pa\u017aniak as its member and arrested him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same ministry added 25 people to the list of \u201cpersons involved in extremist activity.\u201d They were persecuted on charges of violent disorder, financing extremism and insulting Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights groups labeled nine people, persecuted on protest-related charges, as political prisoners yesterday, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 13, human rights defenders identified at least 1,168 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
