September 13,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials are responsible for crimes against humanity committed in Belarus since 2020, as the crackdown against regime critics has continued unabated, says<\/a> a recent report by the Group of Independent Experts on Human Rights Situation in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from May 2020, Belarusian law enforcers have been systematically using violence and punishments to instill fear and suppress any challenge to the government, it said. \u201cBelarus quashes dissent through excessive use of force, arbitrary arrests and detentions, sexual and gender-based violence, torture and summary trials,” the report stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experts also estimated that at least 600,000 people have been forced to flee Belarus and remain in exile since 2020, fearing state-sponsored violence and politically-motivated reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the documented human rights violations amount to international crimes as they were committed as a part of a systematic attack on the Belarusian civil society, with perpetrators being aware of their actions, the report noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group said it had reasonable grounds to believe that Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and other high-level officials have participated in the crimes against humanity of political persecution and imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It detailed some of the accountability options, including setting up an international tribunal, using mechanisms of the International Criminal Court and universal jurisdiction. These approaches should eventually be supplemented by national prosecutions in Belarus once the system of corruption and clientelism protecting \u0141uka\u0161enka is dismantled, the experts concluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
