September 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has acknowledged joint efforts of the European Union and the United States over the past five years to secure the release of Belarusian political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her address to the First European Conference for Freedom and Democracy held on the Italian island of Ventotene, the politician noted a strong and principled position of the EU along with Washington\u2019s diplomatic activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A combination of these approaches helped secure the release of 52 dissidents, pardoned by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka after he met with the US diplomats on September 11, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They all were taken to Lithuania except for opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, who reportedly refused to leave Belarus. His current whereabouts remain unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja admired his courage and sense of integrity after five years in prison. Statkievi\u010d should be an example for everyone as he did not betray his values and principles, she said. Releases with deportation do not mean justice and real freedom, the politician added. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our goal, goal of the Belarusian people and the democratic movement, is to release the whole country from the dictator and from the claws of Russian imperialistic ambitions. We want freedom, we want independence from dictators and we want to see Belarus in the European family of countries,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
