September 15, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has appealed to the international community to demand the release of opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, who refused to leave Belarus after being pardoned on September 11 and may be in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Last week, the former presidential candidate refused forced deportation after being released with 51 other political prisoners. We urge the international community to demand his freedom,” she said on X, citing a Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> report that Statkievi\u010d is being held at a penal colony in H\u0142ybokaje, Viciebsk region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician was one of the 52 dissidents pardoned on September 11 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s meeting with John Coale, US deputy special envoy to Ukraine. On the same day, all of them were taken to Lithuania except for Statkievi\u010d, who refused to leave Belarus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stayed at the Kamienny \u0141oh border checkpoint at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border for several hours, as confirmed by CCTV footage. No further details about the politician’s current whereabouts are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Na\u0161a Niva<\/em>\u2019s report is based on the information obtained by a source who wished to remain anonymous. The prison in H\u0142ybokaje is the same one where Statkievi\u010d had been serving his 14-year term given in a politically-motivated case. For the past two and a half years, he had been held incommunicado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
