September 17, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> A former prisoner on September 16 expressed concern about the deteriorating health of jailed journalist and Polish minority activist Andrzej Poczobut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poczobut, 52, looks like a 70-year-old man, the Maja Kraina Bie\u0142aru\u015b <\/em>Telegram channel reporting, citing a source who saw him a few months ago. The journalist has been in custody since March 2021, serving an eight-year prison term on charges of inciting hatred and calling for sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other developments reported on September 16, singer Alaksiej Hali\u010d was released after serving 15 days in jail for \u201conline picketing,\u201d the Viasna Human Rights Center said, also noting deterioration of his health after detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minsk City Court sentenced journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161 to four years in prison, as requested by prosecutors, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported. Ilja\u0161 had pleaded not guilty to charges of discrediting Belarus and facilitating extremism, dismissing the accusations in his final statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawyer Ta\u0107ciana K\u0142a\u010dko in Babrujsk was given a restricted freedom term in home confinement on protest-related charges, Na\u0161a Niva <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights groups restored political prisoner designation for opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, who refused to leave Belarus as part of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s deal with Washington on September 11, Pozirk <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, \u0141uka\u0161enka pardoned 12 women and 13 men, including those persecuted on extremism-related charges, his press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Siem\u010danka, a former state television journalist who supported the 2020 postelection protests, left Belarus with his family, he said on Facebook. Earlier this year, he was released after serving a prison term on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 17, human rights defenders identified at least 1,168 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because of many undocumented cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
