September 17, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has belittled his political opponent Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d, who refused to leave the country as part of the regime\u2019s deal with the Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler made the remarks in Minsk today, hinting that Statkievi\u010d is back in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019s nearing the end. God forbid, he\u2019ll soon die in prison. Why bother? Well, he wants to be a leader. He went there\u2014to a neutral zone or something\u2014and crossed over to the Lithuanians. The guys asked him, \u2018Do you really want to go back to Belarus? You’ll go to prison there.\u2019 \u2018I will,\u2019\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka reproduced Statkievi\u010d\u2019s supposed conversation at the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe took him back. We can\u2019t abandon him\u2014he’s our man, or rather, our citizen. So, we took him to Belarus. Why offend him? But if he wants to be the leader in burning cars and police houses, then let him stay there,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka said, without specifying Statkievi\u010d\u2019s exact whereabouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statkievi\u010d was arrested in May 2020 and sentenced to 14 years in prison on charges that are widely seen as politically motivated. He was released on September 11 along with 51 other prisoners in a deal between the US administration and \u0141uka\u0161enka. A condition for their release was that the prisoners leave the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Statkievi\u010d refused to emigrate to Lithuania, where the group was taken, and instead returned to Belarus. He was recorded by CCTV cameras at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border between the Kamienny \u0141oh and Medininkai checkpoints that afternoon. There has been no reliable information on his whereabouts since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, Amnesty International demanded that the whereabouts of political prisoner Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d must be immediately disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
