September 22, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The Latvian State Border Guard has recorded more than 10,000 attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus since the beginning of 2025, according to the agency\u2019s daily stats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the weekend of September 20 and 21, Latvia successfully prevented 112 attempts. This year\u2019s total reached 10,099.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2024, Latvia foiled 5,317 attempts to sneak into its territory, and in 2023, it thwarted 8,970 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of September, Latvian border guards recorded 917 attempts. This is 3.3 times more than in the three weeks of September 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of the current year, Belarus\u2019 EU neighbors foiled more than 37,000 illegal entries from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
