September 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A group of independent UN experts has strongly condemned<\/a> the attempted deportation of opposition politician Mika\u0142aj Statkievi\u010d from Belarus and his subsequent disappearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are good reasons to believe that Statkievi\u010d was the victim of enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention, the experts said. They called on Belarus to provide information about his whereabouts and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement recounted the events of September 11, when Statkievi\u010d was taken to the Lithuanian border. After he refused to cross into Lithuania, he was presumably taken to a Belarusian jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experts recalled that Statkievi\u010d was initially arrested ahead of the 2020 presidential election and then sentenced to 14 years in prison. In 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs designated him as an \u201cextremist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UN officials have repeatedly contacted the Belarusian authorities regarding the alleged ill-treatment of the politician in prison, including incommunicado detention, and \u201cthe devastating effect of this ill-treatment on his health due to his advanced age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experts stated that the attempt to expel Statkievi\u010d from his country violated Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ratified by Belarus in 1973.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt also cannot be excluded that we are dealing with a possible crime under international law,\u201d they stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
