September 25, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Jailed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ale\u015b Bialacki remains \u201ca beacon shining in the sky of Belarus, defending rights and justice,\u201d Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas has said at the opening of a photo exhibition marking Bialacki\u2019s 63rd birthday in the Lithuanian parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Seimas speaker’s office, the team of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja and the Viasna Human Rights Center are among the exhibition\u2019s organizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Olekas described Bialacki as \u201ca stronghold for those who fight for freedom and seek justice in their countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next year, Viasna will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its activities that include keeping record of rights abuses and helping jailed regime critics and people who seek justice in Belarus, \u201cwhich is under the rule of a dictator,\u201d the MP noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna\u2019s founder Bialacki, his associates Valancin Stefanovi\u010d and U\u0142adzimir \u0141abkovi\u010d have been held behind bars in Belarus since July 2021. In March 2023, they were sentenced to 10, nine and seven years, respectively, on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, Bialacki was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (he shares the award with human rights organizations Memorial, Russia, and Center for Civil Liberties, Ukraine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
