September 27, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Nuclear weapons represent \u201cthe only guarantee for sovereign states\u201d amid \u201cincreased militarization and the current arms race,\u201d Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d said yesterday in New York, the foreign ministry\u2019s press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official made this statement on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly at a high-level event marking International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons and Oreshnik ballistic missiles in Belarus is defensive in nature, Ry\u017eanko\u016d stressed in this context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk supports the development of reliable security guarantees for all countries, he said, calling for strengthening trust between states and an effective system of collective guarantees that would eliminate the need for nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a deal on security guarantees last year. The document contains the commitment by the two nations to defend the Union State territory and border with \u201call available forces and means,\u201d including Russian tactical nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
