September 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Increasingly tough sanctions are a key instrument of European pressure on Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime, opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja told<\/a> Politico <\/em>in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although US President Donald Trump uses soft rhetoric in relation to dictators, Cichano\u016dskaja says this is not necessarily a bad thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf this rhetoric\u2014of course it\u2019s unpleasant for us\u2014will help to release people, then it\u2019s OK,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said. \u201cPresident Trump is using these carrots to achieve releases of political prisoners. He uses this. It\u2019s his transactional approach to the problem and we have to use this momentum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader opined that softer rhetoric does not represent a change in US policy toward the Belarusian regime and pointed to the European Union\u2019s role in pressuring \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEuropean sanctions and tough and principled position is, in the language of President Trump, it\u2019s their cards,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said. She added that Trump is now playing his cards, while the EU should only use theirs for irreversible and consistent change in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
