September 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Achieving democracy in Belarus would benefit the West, which has become increasingly aware of the country\u2019s strategic importance for regional security, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has stressed at the Warsaw Security Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Threats and provocations will persist as long as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka remains in power, she noted, listing as examples deployment of nuclear weapons, military exercises and Minsk\u2019s facilitation of migration crisis at the European Union\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A free and democratic Belarus will be a reliable partner for the EU, while Ukraine will stop fearing possible future attacks from Russia via Belarus, the politician said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the ongoing politically-motivated reprisals, Belarusians both inside the country and in exile work towards democratic changes, Cichano\u016dskaja said, citing examples of sabotage during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition is also rallying solidarity, support, and assistance from the democratic world to prepare a strategy for Belarus when the moment for change arrives, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Warsaw Security Forum focuses on strengthening transatlantic cooperation and shaping joint responses to security challenges in Central and Eastern Europe. Held annually since 2014, the event brings together over 2,500 high-level officials, business leaders, experts and civil society representatives from more than 90 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
