September 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Washington\u2019s contacts with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka focus on securing communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin, rather than freeing Belarusian dissidents, Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy for Ukraine, told The Guardian<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe established a relationship to ensure the lines of communication were open\u00a0so we could make sure all of our messaging was being passed to President Putin. That was the reason we did it; we weren\u2019t going in there initially to get political prisoners out,\u201d the diplomat said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe know he [\u0141uka\u0161enka] talks to\u00a0President Putin a lot,\u201d\u00a0Kellogg noted. \u201cWe\u2019re not sure what he says, but we know that he talks to him.\u201d Washington had to make sure Putin received consistent messages, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While efforts to end Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine dominate the agenda, the release of several political prisoners was a positive development, the diplomat said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian officials say that Minsk has been engaged in talks with Washington since mid-2024. Since then, the Belarusian ruler has pardoned more than 300 imprisoned regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most recent pardon on September 11 included 52 people, among them prominent opposition figures and journalists, and followed Luka\u0161enka\u2019s meeting with Kellogg\u2019s deputy John Coale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
