September 30, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Foreign Minister Rados\u0142aw Sikorski has met with Christopher Smith, US deputy assistant secretary of state, to discuss efforts to secure the release of Belarus\u2019 political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sikorski noted progress in the \u201cPolish-American dialogue\u201d in his statement<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMore can and will be achieved,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery amnesty step [regarding Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s prisoners] was a result of efforts by the US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration and his best skilled team, including [US deputy special envoy to Ukraine] John Coale and Chris Smith.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 human rights defenders have documented about 1,200 political prisoners, but Be\u0142Po\u0142, a group of former Belarusian security officers involved in efforts to verify victims of political persecution, estimates their real number at 5,500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent contacts between US officials and Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka helped secure the release of dozens of activists. Minsk forced most to them to leave the country immediately on release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
