October 1, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on September 30 as authorities did not allow Apostolic Nuncio to Belarus Ignazio Ceffalia and Catholic Bishop Aleh Butkievi\u010d to meet jailed priests Andrzej Juchniewicz and Hienryk Aka\u0142atovi\u010d, katolik.life <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Homiel sentenced Mikita Hru\u0161e\u016dski to three years in prison on charges of association with an extremist group, slandering and insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161henka and discrediting the state, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 The information ministry expanded its extremist content register by 29 pages in the last two weeks. The designations cover hundreds of social media pages as well as kamunikat.org <\/em>online library, books by American historian Timothy Snyder and Belarusian philosopher Valancin Akudovi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiled journalist Andrej Miale\u0161ka said on Facebook that he faces several criminal charges in Belarus, including calling for sanctions. Law enforcers are reportedly pressuring his mother in Belarus to persuade him to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 1, human rights defenders identified at least 1,198 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
