October 2, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lithuania has extended restrictions on flights along the border until December 1, BNS<\/em> reported, citing the Baltic country\u2019s defense ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The measure will remain in effect until new legislation allows the Armed Forces commander to close air traffic in certain areas, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovil\u0117 \u0160akalien\u0117 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanians will keep a certain section of the airspace closed until the legal framework is established for closing it \u201cvery accurately and precisely\u201d wherever and whenever needed, possibly for very short periods of time, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In August, Lithuania introduced restrictions on flights along the border with Belarus until October 1. The transport ministry took the decision after a request from the Lithuanian Armed Force commander-in-chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense ministry attributed it to security concerns and public safety, including the risks to civil aviation arising from airspace violations by unmanned aerial vehicles. It also mentioned creating conditions for the Lithuanian military to perform tasks established by law in response to airspace violations in peacetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flights in restricted zones are possible in exceptional cases upon permission from the Lithuanian Armed Force commander-in-chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania shares a 679-kilometer border with Belarus. The defense ministry did not specify what part of the airspace Vilnius has closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
