October 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> More than 6,000 teachers lost their jobs due to politically-motivated persecution ongoing in Belarus since 2020, Pavie\u0142 Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s aide in charge of research and education, said ahead of Teachers\u2019 Day, celebrated on October 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dozens of teachers served prison terms and were tortured behind bars, with the situation showing no signs of improvement, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers play \u201ca decisive role in the economic success, well-being, and security of society,\u201d yet in Belarus they face endless reports, excessive workloads and control by the authorities, the politician said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d expressed his admiration for teachers who have maintained their professional dignity despite being exposed to the militarization trends and the destruction of Belarusian language education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn a future free Belarus, we will strive to make education and research the cornerstone of national development, ensuring that teachers are independent professionals whose work is among the most respected and prestigious in society,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka approved Children\u2019s Rights Law amendments to ban people convicted of extremism-related crimes from education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities have been abusing anti-extremism legislation to persecute government critics, right groups say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of teachers and academics resigned for political reasons and fled Belarus after the 2020 postelection protests. The government is reluctant to acknowledge the staff shortage problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
