October 6, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Russia’s Rosatom considers setting up energy storage facilities in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), including Belarus, Aleksandr Pavlyuk, in charge of Rosatom\u2019s energy storage program, has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move would help meet growing foreign demand, Rosatom\u2019s press office reports, citing him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosatom\u2019s energy storage division is also actively collaborating with leading Belarusian car manufacturers on battery projects for cars, as well as electric passenger and freight vehicles, Pavlyuk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian Energy Minister Dzianis Maroz noted earlier this year that expanding the country\u2019s nuclear power capacity will require industrial storage systems. A facility that charges at night and releases energy during the day is essential to safely integrate the new nuclear power plant into the energy grid, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few years, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has repeatedly mentioned plans to expand the nuclear plant in Astraviec, Hrodna region, or construct the second nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located some 10 miles off the Lithuanian border, the first Belarusian nuclear power plant was designed by Rosatom and built with a Russian loan. Lithuania views the plant as unsafe and describes it as a \u201cgeopolitical weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plant\u2019s Unit 1 has supplied electricity to the grid since November 2020, and Unit 2 since May 2023. The units began commercial operation in June 2021 and November 2023, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
