October 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Choosing heroes for the national pantheon is Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s attempt to further tie Belarus to Russia, said Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka, the former Belarusian culture minister who now leads the opposition National Anti-Crisis Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141atu\u0161ka told Pozirk <\/em>that, along with financial, economic and military instruments, history is an element of Russia\u2019s strategy to bind Belarus as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of September, Minsk announced an official pantheon of 55 national heroes. They will be depicted on bas-reliefs on the fa\u00e7ade of the National History Museum currently under construction. The pantheon excludes anyone associated with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as a state or with the Belarusian Democratic Republic, a short-lived independent state of Belarus in 1918. It also leaves out 1863 Uprising leader Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dsk\u0456 and renowned writers Vasil Byka\u016d and U\u0142adzimir Karatkievi\u010d. However, it puts a lot of focus on Orthodox and Soviet figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
