October 6, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Attempts by irregular migrants to enter the European Union from Belarus increased by 80.1 percent year-on-year in the first five days of October, from 347 to 625, according to statistics from the border services of the neighboring EU countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland reported an increase of 63.5 percent to 466. On the Latvian border, attempts jumped by 236 percent to 148. In Lithuania, however, incidents fell by 38.9 percent to 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the beginning of 2025, the three EU countries have recorded a combined total of 38,514 attempts to cross into their territory from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
