October 7, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Upper house members in Minsk have passed a bill to ratifyd a Russian-Belarusian agreement on \u201cthe mutual protection of citizens from unjustified persecution by foreign states and international judicial bodies,\u201d according to the Council of the Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deal is reportedly aimed at protecting Russians and Belarusians, \u201cincluding current or former officials,\u201d from \u201cunfounded criminal prosecution\u201d by other countries. The statement cites alleged politicization of international courts and criminal justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, the opposition National Anti-Crisis Management (NAM) dismissed the agreement as a mere declaration. Under the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, no deals between Belarus and Russia are binding for third countries, which may arrest criminals of the two regimes, the NAM said. This \u201cmakes the agreement essentially a political declaration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
