October 8, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on October 7 as rights defenders reported two convictions of auditor Kry\u015bcina Sa\u0161nikava on politically-motivated charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, she was found guilty of violent disorder, but the sentence remained unknown. Two months ago, the woman was given four years in prison on charges of financing extremist activities, calling for sanctions and inciting hatred, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressure on journalists<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed journalist and Polish minority activist Andrzej Poczobut (Andrej Pa\u010dobut) has been held in a closed prison at Penal Colony No 1 in Viciebsk region\u2019s Navapo\u0142ack since August 23, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) said. He could have been placed in a punishment cell last month, as there was no written communication with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reporter Dzianis Iva\u0161yn, serving a lengthy prison term, has been banned from making phone calls for 10 months, BAJ said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Euroradio <\/em>reported that Belarusian authorities seized one of its mirror domain names.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergency ministry employees may be granted the right to search people and use riot gear, according to a bill approved yesterday by the Council of the Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities continue phone checks and interrogations at border crossings, with some travellers reportedly arrested, BGmedia<\/em> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 8, human rights defenders identified at least 1,195 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
