October 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarus\u2019 interior ministry has denied that its officers tortured Jihad Mohammad Gul Nawaie, the former Afghan military officer who, it said, seeks asylum in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nawaie\u2019s arm turned black as a result of an injury and was eventually amputated after severe torture and prolonged detention without medical care, Afghanistan\u2019s 8am.media reported earlier this week. Other sources claimed that the amputation was due to illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Online media reported on an Afghan national who attempted to enter the European Union irregularly via Belarus and lost his arm allegedly due to brutal treatment by Belarusian police officers. This information is not true,\u201d the ministry stressed in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials also quoted Nawaie saying that “no physical force was used against him by Belarusian police\u201d and that he wants to \u201cbring his family to Belarus because it is safe here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Afghan national arrived in Belarus from Russia and was arrested in Minsk on June 30 with a group of other foreigners, said Ivan Novika\u016d of the interior ministry’s migration department. The man reportedly agreed to leave Belarus for Russia on July 1 as his Russian visa, which gave him the right to stay in Belarus, had expired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, he returned to Belarus irregularly and requested medical help at one of Minsk’s clinics on July 27. Two days later, he was hospitalized and remained in the hospital until September 20, the official added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early September, Belarusian authorities received a letter from the UN Refugee Agency, saying that the man wished to apply for asylum in Belarus. Yesterday, the Afghan national arrived in Viciebsk to submit his application and received all necessary assistance and support, Novika\u016d noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry\u2019s video features comments by Volha \u015aviatlickaja, chief physician at the Minsk City Emergency Hospital, who said that Nawaie had spent 52 days in medical care, and doctors had done their best to save his life. His hospital bill reportedly exceeded 56,000 rubels (some $18,600), and it still has not been paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
