October 9, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union has pledged to prioritize support for Belarusian human rights, civil society and independent media in the next two years, \u201crecognizing these areas as vital for a democratic future,\u201d according to the EU Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This comes after EU officials met with Belarusian pro-democracy politicians in Brussels yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting participants stressed the importance of boosting EU aid for released political prisoners and victims of human rights violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian delegation stressed the urgent need for continued political and financial support in the face of ongoing pressure from the regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU officials reaffirmed the union\u2019s commitment to the democratic aspirations and fundamental freedoms of the Belarusian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe EU and Member States also discussed how to strengthen support for released prisoners through rapid support for rehabilitation and reintegration,\u201d the report said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, the EU pointed to an alternative path. In 2021, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a comprehensive plan worth up to \u20ac3 billion to support Belarus\u2019 democratic future. As soon as the country starts a peaceful democratic transition, the EU will be ready to activate the strategy and provide unprecedented support from the outset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
