October 11, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Washington\u2019s policy of engaging with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime risks undermining years of coordinated pressure, strengthening authoritarian rule and dividing Belarus\u2019 democratic opposition, says<\/a> a recent analysis by the European Democracy Hub (EDH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The joint article was authored by Giselle Bosse, Jean Monnet Chair in EU International Relations at Maastricht University, Ryhor Ni\u017enika\u016d of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs and Wicke van den Broek of Maastricht University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brussels would make a strategic mistake if it copied Washington\u2019s approach, they argued, citing the EU’s shared border with Belarus, the immediate security risks from Russia\u2019s military presence in the country and the existing support for Belarusian pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Renewed engagement is not only unwise and morally wrong but also counterproductive for Europe\u2019s vital security interests,” the analysis stressed. “The EU should stick to its current principled stance of isolating \u0141uka\u0161enka while increasing pressure on the regime and, at the same time, act strategically to constrain Russia\u2019s military exploitation of Belarusian territory.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts outlined five key reasons for the EU to maintain a principled approach toward Belarus. These include reaffirming the bloc\u2019s commitment to a values-based foreign policy, enhancing the ability to counter Russian influence and bolster regional security, making a strategic investment in the Belarusian people, strengthening societal resilience and ensuring the long-term effectiveness of soft power tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
