October 12, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Lithuania did not allow eight third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus on October 9, following five days with no reported attempts, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of data by the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania has recorded 11 instances of multi-day pauses in irregular crossings from Belarus this year, with the longest break lasting 20 days from January 13 to February 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the first ten days of October, Lithuania thwarted 19 irregular crossings, a decrease of 27 percent from early October 2024. However, from January to early October this year, the number of attempted crossings reached 1,289, nearly doubling year on year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
