October 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Former Russian intelligence chief Sergey Lebedev was reappointed as secretary general of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for another three-year term at the bloc’s summit in Dushanbe on October 10, the CIS Executive Committee’s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lebedev, whose original appointment dates back to 2007, will remain CIS secretary general until late 2028, when his tenure will exceed 21 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1998 to 2000, Lebedev had served as the official representative of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) in the United States before his promotion to SVR head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are full members of the CIS. \u00a0Moldova, which prioritizes European integration, remains a de facto a member of the CIS but announced its intention to withdraw in 2022 and has ignored the post-Soviet Russian-dominated bloc\u2019s events since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
