October 14, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Irregular crossings into the European Union via Belarus nearly doubled in the first ten days of October compared to the same period last year, reaching at least 1,410 attempts, according to Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of border guards’ data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions on the Belarusian-Polish border led to a 36-percent month on month rise in crossing attempts, totaling 798 in the first third of October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland and Latvia reported nearly twice as many border crossing attempts compared to early October 2024, while attempts to enter Lithuania dropped by 27 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2025, the EU has thwarted at least 39,299 irregular crossings via Belarus, 20.4 percent more year on year and 8.3 percent more than the total for all of 2024. Most of the attempts \u2013 27,498 \u2013 targeted Poland. Latvia reported 10.512 attempts and Lithuania, 1,289.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
