October 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Ukraine is the key subject of negotiations between Minsk and Washington, Belarus’ secret service chief has said following a top-level conference held in the Belarusian capital today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US partners recognize that Belarus can contribute to Ukraine settlement, as can the US president, who is familiar with the situation, said Ivan Tertel, head of Belarus’ Committee for State Security (KGB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made the remarks after a conference with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, also attended by Prime Minister Alaksandar Tur\u010dyn, Presidential Administration head D\u017amitry Krutoj, Security Council chief Alaksandar Valfovi\u010d and Prosecutor General Andrej \u0160vied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference came one month after US President Donald Trump said Washington was working toward the release of some 1,400 political prisoners in Belarus, whom he described as \u201chostages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of Ukraine crisis after the conference, Tertel told state media journalists that the Belarusian ruler takes it personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur allied relations with the Russian Federation and our close relations with Ukraine allow us to say that [the world] should still try to solve this problem considering our understanding of this story,\u201d the KGB chairman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that Minsk has communication channels with the West. \u201cUnderstanding between us is slowly improving. We discuss pressing issues and sometimes find common ground. Our mutual interest is a stable regional situation, a functioning economy, employment, a peaceful life and prospects for our citizens, the absence of conflict situations and the overall easing of existing tensions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the conference, \u0141uka\u0161enka declared his readiness to strike \u201ca big deal\u201d with the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re waiting for their comprehensive proposals \u2014 a big deal, as they like to say; they love these big deals. We\u2019re ready,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka was quoted as saying by his press office. \u201cOn one side of the scale are their questions, requests and demands; on the other, ours. Shall we decide? Let\u2019s decide. We\u2019re ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He suggested that officials should define \u201cred lines\u201d that must not be crossed to the detriment of Belarus\u2019 relations with Russia and China or its obligations within Russian-led alliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka also stressed that Minsk is ready to play a role in settling the conflict in Ukraine \u2014 if Washington wants it to \u2014 noting that Ukraine must remain an independent and sovereign state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
