October 17, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>The Moscow Mechanism of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) helps monitor transnational repression and find effective responses to these challenges, said opposition politician Pavie\u0142 Latu\u0161ka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deputy head of the opposition transition cabinet made this statement at a meeting organized by German Ambassador to Poland Miguel Berger within the framework of the Weimar Triangle for representatives of Belarusian pro-democracy forces and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was timed to coincide with the OSCE Human Dimension Conference, taking place in Warsaw from October 6 to 17, the cabinet\u2019s press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe large-scale transnational repressive practices of [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime pose a serious threat to regional security in Europe,\u201d said \u0141atu\u0161ka, known for his crusade to bring the Belarusian ruler and his officials to justice for human rights abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician commended the Lithuanian government\u2019s efforts to trigger a preliminary examination in the International Criminal Court. This remark referred to Lithuania\u2019s submission last year of evidence of Belarusian officials\u2019 involvement in transnational crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its referral, Vilnius noted that there are sufficient grounds to believe that security forces committed crimes against humanity under orders from high-ranking Belarusian political, security and military officials since May 1, 2020. They include deportation, persecution and other inhumane acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International backing for Lithuania\u2019s effort is crucial, considering the vast scope of the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime\u2019s cross-border crimes and the pressing need for justice,” \u0141atu\u0161ka stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam Halaci\u0144ski, Polish envoy for relations with Belarusian pro-democracy forces, Susanne Sch\u00fctz and Fat\u00e8ne Benhabyl\u00e8s-Foeth, the German and French ambassadors to the OSCE, respectively, as well as Violaine de Villemeur, the French special envoy for Belarus, attended the meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in 1991, the OSCE\u2019s Moscow Mechanism enables independent inquiries into human dimension issues, including human rights. The fact-finding mechanism was invoked in relation to Belarus in 2011 and again in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
