October 17, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Lithuania has temporarily reinstated security protection for \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, the LRT <\/em>portal reported<\/a>, citing the opposition leader\u2019s diplomatic adviser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the adviser, Dzianis Ku\u010dynski, the Dignitary Protection Service is back in charge of the Belarusian pro-democracy politician’s security until a new arrangement is approved. Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s office is fully operative again and hopes to find “further joint solutions to keep working in Lithuania.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ku\u010dynski said that, regardless of Lithuania\u2019s circumstances or decisions, they will always be grateful for its support and hospitality. \u201cOur goal is to restore freedom to Belarus, return home and be a reliable neighbor for Lithuania,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed the importance of Lithuania continuing to be a leader that supports democratic values and takes a firm stance on the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da said that his country is willing to keep providing asylum to Cichano\u016dskaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in October, Lithuania moved to downgrade security for Cichano\u016dskaja, who lives in Vilnius with her family. Ku\u010dynski said that her office in the Lithuanian capital suspended operations due to \u201cchanges in the security and safety system.\u201d Naus\u0117da\u2019s adviser, Asta Skaisgiryt\u0117, then clarified that the decision to downgrade the security detail for Cichano\u016dskaja was not final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Naus\u0117da, the decision was taken after a thorough assessment of the threat level. He argued that politicians were dramatizing the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja and her team remain welcome people in Lithuania, the president said. Vilnius is always ready to provide asylum to those who are persecuted, he added. Naus\u0117da expressed hope that the team will stay in Lithuania, noting that Vilnius will create all the necessary conditions for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
