October 22, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The European Parliament’s draft<\/a> resolution on Belarus urges the European Union to strengthen sanctions against the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime, reiterating the call on EU and Western companies to cease their activities in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPs advocated targeted sanctions on intermediaries who help Minsk evade fertilizer sanctions and facilitate transit, calling for stronger enforcement and cross-border information-sharing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe human rights situation in Belarus remains critical,\u201d the document reads. \u201cThe illegitimate regime of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has, with Russian support, conducted a relentless campaign of repression against peaceful protesters, democratic leaders, lawyers, journalists, athletes, artists, trade unions, religious leaders, civil society actors and others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draft resolution also noted an \u201calarming level of transnational repression\u201d conducted by \u0141uka\u0161enka and his officials,\u00a0including in the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPs called for urgent measures to counter and put an end to these practices, demanding the \u201cimmediate and unconditional\u201d release of jailed regime critics in Belarus. The EU and its member states should support Belarusian dissidents, continue monitoring trials in Belarus when possible and conduct independent investigations into all cases of deaths behind bars, they stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk may use jailed political opponents as a tool to extort concessions from the West, as pardons coincide with new arrests, the document noted. It also voiced concern over the recent US decision to ease sanctions on Bie\u0142avija, which has reportedly been complicit in the instrumentalization of migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPs are expected to vote on the resolution today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
