October 23, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The European Union\u2019s 19th package of sanctions against Russia for its war on Ukraine features several banks in Belarus, Reuters<\/em> reported yesterday, citing the Danish rotating presidency of the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The specific institutions targeted remain unclear, as the EU has yet to officially publish the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new sanctions package also includes a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas imports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All EU member states reportedly reached an agreement last week, with a delay linked to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico\u2019s demands for guarantees from the European Commission amid high energy prices, as well as the alignment of climate targets with the needs of carmakers and heavy industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, Bie\u0142ahraprambank, Dabrabyt, Bie\u0142investbank and the Belarusian Development Bank are subject to EU sanctions. Three years ago, all four were disconnected from SWIFT, an international interbank system for transferring information and making payments. In July, Brussels also expanded a transaction ban on these banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU started introducing sanctions against Belarus in 2020, two years before Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine, accusing its government of vote rigging and human rights abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
