{"id":1613,"date":"2023-08-25T16:31:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T13:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=1613"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"un-human-rights-chief-slams-viasna-extremist-label","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/1613\/","title":{"rendered":"UN human rights chief slams Viasna extremist label"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 25,&nbsp;<em>BPN.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/strong>The UN human rights chief has denounced Minsk&#8217;s decision to declare the Viasna Human Rights Center an extremist group as evidence of a crackdown on dissent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This week&#8217;s decision by authorities to declare the country&#8217;s leading human rights organization Viasna as &#8216;extremist&#8217; is a further disturbing sign of the ongoing crackdown on civil society, media and other independent voices,&#8221; Volker T\u00fcrk said on X this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior ministry took the decision on August 23, accusing the center of extremist activities on the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move also drew fire from&nbsp;the US Department of State. &#8220;We stand in solidarity with the people of Belarus and their legitimate demands for accountability and respect for human rights,&#8221; spokesman Matthew Miller said two days ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Viasna center emerged during Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka&#8217;s first term in office and has documented his government&#8217;s human rights abuses for decades. It has also provided legal advice to citizens and promoted democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The center&#8217;s founder, Ale\u015b Bialacki, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, is serving a 10-year
