October 28, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Politically-motivated reprisals continue to target Belarusian regime critics both in Belarus and abroad, Iryna Cha\u0142opica of the Coordination Council has stressed in her address to the annual session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up to one million Belarusians were forced to leave their country, fearing reprisals after the 2020 postelection protests, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka regime uses fabricated criminal charges, trials in absentia, property confiscation, threats to family members and smear campaigns \u2014 practices that constitute transnational repression,\u201d Cha\u0142opica said, calling on the Council of Europe (CoE) to intensify measures against such methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExiled Belarusians are denied the right to obtain or renew identity documents under \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s decree, which bans Belarusian consulates abroad from issuing or extending passports. This measure forces people to return to Belarus, where they risk persecution,\u201d she said, adding that tens of thousands of exiles now face legal status issues and live in fear of deportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activist urged the CoE to step up support for Belarusians who, unlike other migrants, receive no assistance from their own state through consular or diplomatic channels and face an exceptionally difficult situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
