October 28, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Belarus keeps systematically violating human rights in labor and employment, including discrimination and harassment based on political motives, says<\/a> the recent report by UN Special Rapporteur Nils Mui\u017enieks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many were dismissed for exercising their civil and political rights during the 2020 postelection protests and expressing support for opposition candidates, it noted. In certain sectors, employment is granted based on loyalty to the authorities and alignment with official ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A whole section of the document focuses on forced labor, which is used in Belarus as a form of punishment for jailed political opponents. Prisoners are forced to work for a symbolic wage or without pay at all in hard and dangerous conditions, Mui\u017enieks said, also calling for the abolishment of therapeutic labor camps for alcohol abusers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key recommendations include prohibiting indirect discrimination, ending interference with workers\u2019 freedom of expression and discontinuing the practice of controlling workers\u2019 personal devices, online activities, family relations and travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities must ensure that public and private entities do not infringe on the human rights of their employees and abolish the informal blacklists introduced in 2020 to restrict employment opportunities for regime critics, the report noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The special rapporteur also called on Minsk to release without delay all persons detained for legitimately exercising their civil, political and labor rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
