October 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Suggestions to engage in dialogue with Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka are premature, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has told the participants in a panel discussion at the Paris Peace Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka has seized and maintained power in Belarus through force, reprisals and Moscow\u2019s support and has repeatedly sought to deceive the democratic world and Europe over the past 30 years, she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As long as \u0141uka\u0161enka remains in power, he will continue to pose a threat to Belarus\u2019 neighbors, Cichano\u016dskaja noted. ” How can we talk to a man who undermines stability, threatens Poland, Lithuania, and other countries and stages provocations at the borders, from drones flying into Poland to balloons carrying cigarettes that disrupt airport operations? These provocations will not stop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician called for the use of all available tools to punish dictators and expressed confidence that democracy will prevail if institutions and mechanisms, such as sanctions, are fully mobilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSanctions do not change dictators, but they force them to alter their behavior and make concessions. However, when there are loopholes, they find ways to circumvent them. For more than a year and a half, no new sanctions have been imposed on the Belarusian regime, which fosters a sense of impunity,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Paris Peace Forum brings together governments, civil society actors, businesses and international organizations which seek common solutions for peace and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
