October 30, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Alaksandra Mamajeva, head of the Belarusian pro-democracy forces\u2019 delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, has called on local authorities in European countries hosting exiled Belarusians to cooperate with opposition embassies, human rights groups and diaspora organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 29, Mamajeva spoke at a discussion on helping Belarusians who face transnational repression, during the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have lived in these countries for years,\u201d said Mamajeva, who also represents the opposition embassy in Slovenia. \u201cWe know the law, document real cases and can share information to explain how local authorities might work with Belarusians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, Belarusian organizations are willing to share local solutions that already work well in different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She pointed out that the Swedish migration service issued a legal position confirming that Belarusians should not be forced to return to their country for documents. In Austria, the local authorities accept expired passports from Belarusians applying for residence permit extensions, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Slovenia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs officially replied to Belarusians\u2019 request and confirmed that apostille or criminal record certificates are not required if someone explains that they cannot provide them. A signed statement is accepted, and responsibility is lifted from the officials on the case,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Poland and Lithuania run working groups formed of government officials, Belarusian pro-democracy politicians and activists. Denmark, Slovenia, Austria and Italy started issuing travel documents to Belarusians, Mamajeva said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
