November 3, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has called on New Zealand to officially recognize the structures of the Belarusian pro-democracy forces as she addressed the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician also asked New Zealand not to extradite Belarusians as they may face persecution for their political views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion on Belarus, European security and Russia’s war on Ukraine was organized in cooperation with Victoria University of Wellington, gathering more than 100 experts, diplomats and journalists, Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s aide Franak Via\u010dorka has told Pozirk<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe advocate for more economic sanctions against the regime \u2013 but not against the Belarusian people,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said. \u201cWe must preserve their mobility: let them travel, study and see what life in democracy is like. We also call our partners to open cases against [Alaksandar] \u0141uka\u0161enka and his cronies, to ensure their accountability. We\u2019ve collected evidence of 6,700 cases of crimes against humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician added that support for the Belarusian pro-democracy movement is part of backing Ukraine, and vice versa, as both face a common enemy in Moscow. Weakening Russia is key to Ukraine\u2019s victory and Belarus\u2019s freedom, she stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
