November 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Delegates to the UN Human Rights Council\u2019s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) have expressed concern about Belarus\u2019 deteriorating human rights situation at hearings in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EU speakers demanded the release and full exoneration of political prisoners, a review of \u201canti-extremist\u201d laws, an end to reprisals against civil society, an end to Belarus\u2019 support of the Russian war against Ukraine, free elections, freedom of the press and public organizations, a moratorium on the death penalty and other democratic reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delegations of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia also demanded an end to the ongoing migration crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delegates from Belarus were also given the floor. For instance, an information ministry official claimed that the government does not discriminate against professional journalists and that the country has introduced criminal punishment for their persecution. A justice ministry official denied the allegations of torture in Belarusian prisons, while Deputy Foreign Minister Ihar Siakreta denied the existence of political prisoners in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
