November 5, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Aggression against the Union State or a Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) member state would be considered an attack on Belarus, if amendments to defense and security laws adopted at the second reading by the House of Representatives are approved by the upper house and signed by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hienad\u017a Lepia\u0161ko, chairman of the lower house\u2019s standing committee on national security, told reporters that MPs propose to supplement the law \u201cOn Defense\u201d with a corresponding provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAdditional tasks would also be introduced into the law \u2018On the Armed Forces,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the main additional tasks is the Armed Forces\u2019 participation in preventing an internal conflict and the resolution of such a conflict in the event of its outbreak. The law \u2018On Martial Law\u2019 would incorporate some significant additions to the powers of the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff and government agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepia\u0161ko added that the bill would authorize the Ministry of Defense to analyze the domestic and international situation and advise the head of state on announcing martial law and \u201corganizing armed defense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The General Staff of the Armed Forces would be authorized to ensure that the Armed Forces, other troops and state agencies are ready for mobilization and combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
