November 8, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The mass incursions of Lithuanian airspace by cigarette-smuggling balloons launched from Belarus should be treated as hybrid attacks, MEP Liudas Ma\u017eylis said in his appeal to the European Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar hybrid attacks involving unmanned aerial vehicles or other technical devices have also been recorded in different European countries, he said, citing drone sightings in Denmark that led to the temporary suspension of air traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belgium, Germany, Poland and Romania also reported airspace violations related to reconnaissance or destabilizing activities, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such hybrid attacks target the European aviation sector, disrupting civilian flights, threatening the security of airport infrastructure and causing panic, Ma\u017eylis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These acts directly violate the integrity of European airspace and the Schengen area and may also have significant consequences for the security and economy of the European Union, MEP stressed, asking the European Commission to develop a response mechanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
