November 14, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Human rights defenders have documented new instances of politically motivated persecution of journalists and activists, as well as censorship, on November 12 and 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aksana Ko\u0142b, an exiled former editor of the newspaper Novy \u010cas<\/em>, was charged with facilitating extremism and mass disorder in late 2023. The Belarusian Association of Journalists was aware of the criminal case but learned of the specific charges only on November 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Jelisieje\u016d, an activist from Kalinkavi\u010dy in the Homiel region, is being held at the Mahilo\u016d detention center. He faces charges of high treason and insulting the head of state, according to the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Minsk, the Centralny District Court sentenced a 37-year-old man to two years in prison for allegedly discrediting Belarus through his Wikipedia articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry has added several new accounts to its list of extremist content, including Viasna\u2019s hotline and various Instagram pages such as esercizidi_memoria<\/em>, narodby<\/em>, shevardnadze_by<\/em>, and majstr_by<\/em>; Yevgeny Fyodorov\u2019s VK account; as well as TikTok accounts dzimicer<\/em>, bypashaandreevich<\/em>, belfury1<\/em> and kasiavadanosava<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 5, the Committee for State Security designated the media outlet Plan B<\/em> as an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian human rights defenders recognized 14 inmates as political prisoners, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of November 13, human rights organizations listed 1,247 political prisoners in Belarus, though the actual number is believed to be significantly higher due to numerous undocumented cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observers attribute the recent decline in documented cases to the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to block public access to its electronic schedule of trials and its database of rulings since early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
