November 15, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarus\u2019 media and human rights defenders reported new instances of censorship and persecution of journalists, as well as additions to the lists of political prisoners and extremists on November 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Supreme Court upheld a four-year prison sentence for journalist Ihar Ilja\u0161, convicted in September of discrediting Belarus and facilitating extremism, Siarhiej Vahana\u016d, the granddad of Ilja\u0161\u2019s imprisoned wife said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry added former Intex-Press<\/em> journalists Natalla Siemianovi\u010d, Mikita Piatro\u016dski, Rus\u0142an Raviaka and Ludmi\u0142a Zielankova to the list of \u201cextremists.\u201d Based on the entries, the Viasna Human Rights Center concluded that the journalists were sentenced to non-custodial \u201crestricted freedom\u201d terms earlier this year. Therefore, the journalists must be living at home under close police supervision. They are allowed to leave their homes for work during the day but have a curfew to observe. The journalists have not contacted their former colleagues after the trial, apparently for fear of punishment. They were arrested on December 3, 2024 and were held in custody until August 19, when their trial concluded and they were sent home to serve their sentence in home confinement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In all, the interior ministry added 25 people to the extremist list, including six designated political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the information ministry blacklisted the Tiktok account andreialfa76 <\/em>as extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian human rights groups declared nine more people as political prisoners, according to a joint statement released by Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement names Andrej Bakurenka, Alaksandar Chom\u010dyk, Mika\u0142aj Luckievi\u010d, Alaksandar Va\u016d\u010dok, Ja\u016dhien Dziemianio\u016d, Alaksandar Kazak, Anton Ravan and Alaksandar Skarachod, who have already been sentenced; and Alaksandar Jelisieje\u016d, who has been taken into custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> and Pozirk<\/em> reported that Uladzimir Hundar, a 65-year old activist with disability serving a 20-year prison sentence, complained of visual impairment.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of November 14, human rights organizations listed 1,255 political prisoners in Belarus, though the actual number is believed to be significantly higher due to numerous undocumented cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observers attribute the recent decline in documented cases to the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to block public access to its electronic schedule of trials and its database of rulings since early April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
