November 21, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Ignoring or punishing Minsk instead of engaging in dialogue is counterproductive, Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, a former apostolic nuncio and current prefect of the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches, has told Vatican News<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cardinal\u2019s comments on relations between Belarus and the Holy See followed yesterday\u2019s pardon of two Catholic priests in Belarus, weeks after Gugerotti met Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in Minsk. Vatican envoy Ignazio Ceffalia and Belarusian Archbishop Juzaf Stanie\u016dski also reportedly participated in the negotiations with the Belarusian ruler to secure the release of jailed priests Andrej Juchnievi\u010d and Hienryk Aka\u0142atovi\u010d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The correct approach, both in interpersonal relations and in politics, consists in \u201cconstant readiness for meeting and dialogue,\u201d Gugerotti stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI spent many years in Belarus and had many chances to meet with the authorities,\u201d he said, referring to his tenure as apostolic nuncio from 2011 to 2015. \u201cIn my view, it is essential to speak directly\u2014and to do so one-on-one rather than through the media. That approach allows people to seek clarification without feeling attacked. You can say anything, as long as you say it face-to-face and with respect. It doesn\u2019t mean agreeing on everything; it means acknowledging the other person\u2019s perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gugerotti added that his talks with \u0141uka\u0161enka touched on the closure of the Red Church in Minsk as well as the possibility of a papal visit to Belarus. The Belarusian ruler reportedly assured the cardinal that a visit by the Pope would be beneficial for the Belarusian people under the right conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts assume that \u0141uka\u0161enka aims to improve relations with the Holy See to use it as a platform to engage with the West, citing Minsk\u2019s intention to open the Belarusian embassy in the Vatican this year and the recent appointment of senior diplomat Juryj Ambrazievi\u010d as an ambassador to the Holy See.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
