November 21, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>More than 1,000 Lithuanian trucks remain stranded in Belarus and cannot return despite the recent reopening of the border checkpoints, MP Laurynas Kas\u010di\u016bnas, chairman of the conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWeather balloons keep disrupting airport operations, smugglers are running rampant and the crisis and chaos continue,\u201d the politician noted, accusing the government of failing to deliver a coordinated response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parliamentary opposition plans to summon Prime Minister Inga Ruginien\u0117 to a joint meeting to determine whether the government has a plan to address the crisis and to present its own proposals, the politician stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of this morning, not a single Lithuanian truck stranded in Belarus after the border closure on October 29 had returned to Lithuania,\u00a0LRT<\/em>\u00a0reported, quoting Giedrius Mi\u0161utis, spokesman for the State Border Protection Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Medininkai\u2013Kamienny \u0141oh and \u0160al\u010dininkai\u2013Bieniakoni border crossings resumed full operations at midnight yesterday, after Vilnius kept them closed since late October over incursions by cigarette-smuggling balloons from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the same day, Minsk proposed holding consultations between the Belarusian and Lithuanian foreign ministries to create a mechanism ensuring stable border-crossing procedures and preventing future closures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 1,265 Lithuania-registered trucks are stuck in Belarus. Minsk barred these cargo vehicles from leaving the country and ordered them moved to guarded parking sites. Vilnius, in turn, accused Belarus of escalation by seizing the vehicles and preventing their return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
