November 21, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusians could be living in a very different country if just 10 percent of funds \u201cburied in inefficient agriculture\u201d had been invested in research, said Pavie\u0142 Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja’s representative on education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus ranks 79th<\/sup> globally by the number of academic publications in peer-reviewed journals, after Macau and Nepal, he noted. The country produces far fewer publications per capita than its neighbors in the region, lagging behind Latvia, Lithuania and Poland by a factor of five, and Estonia by a factor of ten, Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Academy of Sciences, as a research organization is \u201cdeeply archaic,\u201d he said, noting that in the modern world such institutions exist mainly as informal clubs for researchers, discussion platforms or venues for award ceremonies. In the 21st century, innovation is driven by scientific and technological clusters, the politician stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In more than 30 years in power, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has devastated Belarusian science. \u201cThere is probably no other sector of the Belarusian economy where his interference has had such catastrophic effects,\u201d Ciera\u0161kovi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
