November 24, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, speaking at a news conference in Warsaw on November 24, stressed the importance of the European Union\u2019s involvement in peace talks on Ukraine for safeguarding Belarus\u2019 future as an independent state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She noted that the EU would help advance the interests of a democratic Belarus because \u201cit is also their need for Belarus to be independent of Russian influence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe voice of Belarus can be heard. A year ago we could not imagine that, as is the case now, the EU is not directly involved in the talks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja emphasized that Belarus must not be left under Russia\u2019s control as a result of any negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her comments come after US and Ukrainian officials met in Switzerland on Sunday to discuss possible ways to end the war with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, the US and Ukrainian teams reviewed a 28-point proposal drafted last month by American and Russian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original version suggested handing over the parts of Ukraine\u2019s industrial eastern Donbas region still under Kyiv\u2019s control to the de facto authority of Russian President Vladimir Putin \u2014 an option unacceptable to Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plan also proposed reducing the size of Ukraine\u2019s armed forces to 600,000 personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
