November 25, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The All-Belarusian People\u2019s Assembly (UNS) should “deal with larger, global issues,” without overstepping or assuming too much power, Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has told its presidium today ahead of the assembly\u2019s session scheduled for December 18 and 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNS should develop its working style, focusing on defining the authorities\u2019 strategic tasks and monitoring internal developments, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe most dangerous thing for us. . . is if the UNS later comes into conflict with another president,\u201d the Belarusian ruler’s press office quoted him as saying. \u201cThis would be a disaster. There should be no conflict. We must ensure that everyone fulfils their duties in organizing the work of the UNS and its presidium.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formed by \u0141uka\u0161enka in 1996, the UNS was given constitutional status after the controversial February 2022 referendum. \u0141uka\u0161enka was elected its chairman in an uncontested vote last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNS has a maximum of 1,200 members with a five-year mandate who must convene at least once a year to set out the strategic priorities for society and the government. The UNS powers include proposing legislation and constitutional amendments, approving foreign and domestic policies and impeaching the president. \u0141uka\u0161enka said the UNS comprised his allies only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNS should play its role without interfering in other state agencies\u2019 activities, \u0141uka\u0161enka said earlier this year, calling for an end to excessive \u201cmeetings, correspondence and formalism\u201d and for avoiding \u201cpitting one government body against another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, he also played down the role of the revamped UNS, stressing that it should not dominate other branches of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
